Windows : What To Expect From Microsoft Windows 8

Microsoft is already hard at work on Windows 8. While it's still only in the development stage, we already have somedetails about what new features it could have from inside sources and leaked development builds. In this article, we look at some more features we are likely to see when it is released.
New Features Added :
  • Hybrid Booting : According to the Windows 8 Italia Website - new version of Windows will most likely include a "hybrid boot" using "advanced hibernation functionality". Hybrid Boot is a cross between hibernation and sleep mode. Computers would shut down and start up faster, perhaps in as little as 20 seconds.
  • Simple System Reset : It will allow a user or system administrator to ‘reset’ the operating system back to the default settings. It appears to be a quick and easy process, with user accounts and personal files kept in backup space, before the default Windows settings are restored.
  • Tablet Strategy : Sounds like Microsoft is taking a cue from the tablet market. 'Push notifications' will allow content to be displayed on screen similar to that of Windows Phone 7. Windows 8 will also likely offer 3D support and facial recognition, and have built-in access to the Microsoft app store. Users will be able to login using an Android-like pattern match, presumably for those who are using tablets or slate devices lack a keyboard.
  • Cloud Based Roaming Profile : Personalization settings (Aero and colour settings) all the way through to language settings and wireless credentials will be stored in the cloud, so you can take your ‘computer’ on the go with you. Whether files and folders will be synced also, should be subject to extreme caution, however.
  • Other features : Include updated User Interface, Black Screen of Death instead of the blue one, improved disk cleanup facility, ‘Modern Reader’ the PDF reading application, slimmed down version of the browser etc to be known.
The ARM controversy :
Windows 8 will have ARM support, a low-power processor which allows devices to run longer on batteries - move away from the traditional Windows with Intel processor computers. The ARM microchip architecture is already being used in many tablets. This switch from the traditional x86 platform says clearly that  Microsoft is seeing tablets as the future.
So, what's the controversy? Intel said that due to ARM processors, versions of Windows 8 would not be compatible with older Windows programs written for Windows 7, Vista and XP. "Intel's statements for the next version of Windows were factually inaccurate and unfortunately misleading" - were Microsoft's remarks.
While many technologist believe that Intel might be saying the truth, claiming that legacy apps wouldn't run on an ARM processor. Traditional versions of Windows, and the subsequent programs built to run on the OS, were made for chips based on Intel's x86 architecture, not ARM. For the things to be clear, we will have to wait till any conclusive fact is tossed.
Different versions ?
It's too early to know how Microsoft will package Windows 8, but it's unlikely the company will give up on offering six different of its trademark OS as it has with both Windows 7 and Vista. According to an Intel executive Renee James, Microsoft will make at least four different versions of Windows 8. She added that Windows 8 Traditional will be  very different from the ARM version of Windows 8 targeted at mobile devices.
So early ?
Windows 7 has yet to see a mass adoption and  Windows 8 will be releasing somewhere in next year. According to Consumer Reports, 54 percent of Windows computers are still running 10 years old Windows XP, while 11 percent are Windows Vista.  Microsoft is tired of being standing behind in the tablet business and so may have desperately hurried up with Windows 8 to take chances to stand against the very fast growth of Apple and Android's.
Steve Ballmer, on Monday, announced in Tokyo
As we look forward to the next generation of Windows systems, which will come out next year, there's a whole lot more coming. As we progress through the year, you ought to expect to hear  lot about Windows 8 slates, tablets, PCs, a variety of different form factors.
Lets wait for the further revealings about Windows 8. Microsoft will surely have to come up with something very exciting.

Linux : Ubuntu : Install Ubuntu Restricted Extras

Ubuntu does not come with the codecs to play non-free audio and video formats. It does not come with other non-free stuffs like Flash etc. Ubuntu 11.04, however, provides an option to downland and install them during the installation. However, if you are like me and did not select it during installation to speed up the install, you have to install them separately.
These packages are available as ubuntu-restricted-extras. To install, open the Terminal and execute the command below:
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

Linux : Install Unity 2D and GIMP

Unity 2D is a lighter version of the normal Unity (or Unity 3D) which comes with Ubuntu 11.04. Unity 3D does not run in systems which does not support 3D acceleration. Unity 2D will however run on such systems and it is also a lot more responsive compared to Unity 3D.
You can have both Unity 2D and Unity 3D installed on the same Ubuntu installation and select which one to launch at the login screen. To install Unity 2D, open the Terminal and execute the following commands:
$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:unity-2d-team/unity-2d-daily
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install unity-2d

 Install GIMP

GIMP is a fantastic image editor. However it does not come pre-installed in Ubuntu 11.04. You may need to install GIMP if you take photos and do some image editing. Install it with the command below:
$ sudo apt-get install gimp

Linux : Install Skype

To install Skype, open the Terminal and do the following:
$ sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list
Look for the lines shown below. Uncomment them and save it.
deb http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu natty partner
deb-src http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu natty partner
Now install Skype:
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install skype

Linux : Install VLC for Ubuntu 11.04

VLC is perhaps the best video player available for Ubuntu. It does not come pre-installed with Ubutnu 11.04, so you have to install it on your own.
$ sudo apt-get install vlc

Linux : Install CompizConfig Settings Manager

With Ubuntu 11.04, the Compiz settings manager is a must have. Unity is basically a plugin for Compiz. So, if you want to change something in Unity, you have to do it using the CompizConfig Settings Manager.
Install CompizConfig Settings Manager with the command given below:
$ sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager

Linux : Install Yakuake Terminal on Ubuntu 11.04

Yakuake is a quake-style terminal emulator based on KDE Konsole technology.Running yakuake is faster than launching a new terminal.It’s useful for people who frequently  open and close terminals for odd tasks.

To install yakuake just running following command in terminal:
sudo apt-get install yakuake
Make it auto run when login,navigate to System–>Preferences–>Startup Applications,click add and type something like following

Next time you login,press F12 to show yakuake and press F12 again to hide.
For settings,just right click on it.

Linux : How To Install GNOME 3 Shell In Ubuntu 11.04 Using The Ubuntu GNOME Remix PPA

GNOME 3 has a new UI called the GNOME Shell. With Ubuntu 11.04, however, Canonical has decided to go with its own UI called Unity. Earlier we wrote a post on how you can install GNOME Shell in Ubuntu 11.04. In this post, we will tell you how to do it using the Ubuntu GNOME Remix PPA.
The Ubuntu GNOME Remix is a fairly new project which is aiming to create a derivative of Ubuntu which has the same base as Ubuntu but uses GNOME Shell as the UI instead of Unity.

Before you decide to go through with the installation, remember that this project is at a very early stage and you could face a lot of problems. Do not install this on a production machine and keep in mind that you cannot undo the changes.
Now that we have that warning out of the way, if you still want to install GNOME Shell in Ubuntu 11.04, follow the steps given below:
Remove gnome-accessibility-themes. It causes conflicts and dependencies issues with the installation.

$ sudo apt-get --purge remove gnome-accessibility-themes
Now add the Ubuntu GNOME Remix PPAs
$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gnome3-team/gnome3
$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntugnometeam/ppa-gen
Finally install withe the command below:
$ sudo apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade
$ sudo apt-get install ugr-desktop-g3 gnome-shell
After the installation is done, restart your system. At the login screen, pick Ubuntu GNOME Shell Desktop.

What works? What does not work?

After the installation, GNOME Shell seems to work. The dash seems to work quite well. Occasionally, though, the Windows decoration gets all messed up. The GNOME Shell is not smooth and certainly should not be considered for any use except for testing at this point.
Unity uses GNOME 2 technologies and GNOME 3 uses GNOME 3 technologies. So, once GNOME Shell has been installed, Unity does not work although it is still available in the login screen.
